How it Works

What is the required word count?

For the Pro version
A romance novel, as defined by industry standards, is considered to be anything from 50000 words.  To this end we have set a minimum commitment of 50 000 for the Pro version to help you write your novel, whether it’s your break out debut novel or your 20thtime out the gate.  You have 31 days to write a minimum of that many words at a rate of 1613 words per day.  Challenging but doable.

For the Lite version
For those of you wanting to participate who are either already in the middle of a project or those who are intimidated by the thought of tackling 50 000 words your first time writing more than an email, Lite is for you.  You can set your own word count as long as it is a minimum of 20 000 words.  This can either be a novella or words towards a project you are already working on.

Whichever version you choose, you are only limited by your imagination.

How do I validate my word count?

Until such time as we have our word validating app completed we will be working on an honour system.  We ask that you update your word count by posting your current total once a week on our closed Facebook group.  Remember, you cheat no one other than yourself if you post an incorrect word count.

How do I participate?

We are currently working on growing our platform but while we’re in our infancy stages, participation will be limited to registering via our closed Facebook group on 1 March 2018.  You simply need to comment on our post announcing the start of Romance Novel Writing Month with:
·  Your project name and genre
·  Your preferred version (Pro or Lite) and the number of words you’re committing to should you be doing the Lite version.
And then you start writing.  We would suggest using the month of February (or as we like to call it Planuary to prepare/plan for Romance Novel Writing Month.

Who may participate?

Romance Novel Writing Month is open to anyone interested in writing in the genre.  If you write a different genre but would still like to participate – you are most welcome to join us.  It doesn’t matter where you live or what your language is.  Your manuscript can be written in your home language.  However, the language of the group will be English, to keep it universal, so all correspondence will have to be done in English.

How do I win?  Are there any prizes?

The aim of Romance Novel Writing Month is to encourage you to write.  Whether you complete your set number of words or not by the end of March any words you’ve written will be that many more than you had to start with, making you a winner.  However, to be considered a winner of Romance Novel Writing Month you will need to have completed your chosen number or words for that month.  Unfortunately, there are no prizes other than a lovely certificate congratulating you on your achievement at the moment.  We are currently working on this so watch this space.

Is there an entry fee?

No, participation in the Romance Novel Writing Month is completely free.

How old do I have to be to participate?

Romance Novel Writing Month is open to anyone over the age of 16.

What happens with my story at the end of the month?

That is completely up to you.  You can bury it in a drawer never to see the light of day again or, and we hope you pick this option, you can start the process of editing and submitting it or self publishing it.  If you do decide to go the self publishing route we do encourage you to have your manuscript professionally edited.
